So there were several new kids at my teen writer’s group today. (During the summer, the group meets every week for six weeks as part of the library’s summer reading program.) One of the new girls introduced herself, told what grade she’s in (8th, I think), and what she likes to write (poetry), and then she said, “and I like to blow things up!”

You have to understand, she’s not a scary kid. I THINK she’s into science rather than violence (though I could be wrong…) She seems pretty mild-mannered. So I asked her what she blows up. She said she tried to blow up chipmunks last week, but it didn’t work (I was glad to hear that!). And then she wanted to blow up their old microwave, but her mom wouldn’t let her (again, probably a good thing). She shared a really good poem today, though (so claims the group facilitator who knows next to NOTHING about poetry…I WISH these kids wrote more fiction!). It was clear, concise and evoked feeling. Hopefully she won’t blow anything up during our sessions…

Interesting kid…
