I joined JoNoWriMo today. My oldest son did NaNoWriMo last year (while taking 17-18 credits at the university and working a part-time job). He signed up with the local university group (though there were non-university people there, too!), and they met for dinner/writing almost every Friday night last November. It looked like so much fun that I’ve been threatening to do it with him this year. Even though he never went through that I-don’t-want-to-be-seen-with-you-in-public phase that most teens go through, hanging out with him on campus might be pushing it a little. So I decided to do JoNoWriMo instead.

I kind of feel like I’m “cheating” with my goals, though, because both of them are things I NEED to have done by the end of November. I should’ve had this proposal for the Monkey Man sequel done long ago (and tomorrow night I have to go to my writer’s group and admit that I STILL don’t have this done!), and I need to have the first draft of The Truth About T.M.S. in by Thanksgiving.

I did work this weekend, though. I finished this pass of revisions on When Grandpa Had a Stroke. And I THINK I’m satisfied with the synopsis of my new middle grade novel that I’m going to have critiqued (along with the first ten pages) at the Iowa SCBWI conference next month. But I’m waiting until tomorrow before I send it off (the deadline is Wednesday). I haven’t had a critique at an SCBWI conference in a long time. But I understand Michael Stearns edits a lot of science fiction…and this is science fiction mystery, so it’ll be interesting to see what he has to say about it…so now it’s back to that propoal!

    YAY!

YAY! I joined JoNoWriMo today too! I’ve tried NaNoWriMo for the past three years. Once Nov. 1 hits, I go into psycho mode with birthday and holiday preparations. I have no reason to expect this year will be any different, so I think Jo’s group is a better fit.

I’m so excited to see you’ll be at the Iowa Conference! A few of us from KS are going together. See you then!

Wonderful! I’m looking forward to meeting the woman who started me blogging!

Hey, do you know Lisa Harkrader? Is she one of the KS people who are coming? (I guess I could e-mail her myself and ask her…but I’m also curious whether you know each other.)

We know each other, but I don’t know if she’s coming. Did you know she’s getting a Kansas Notable Book medal on Sept 29th?

So what does JoNoWriMo stand for? Someone else mentioned this, too, and I realized I don’t know.

JoNo is Jo Knowles at (let’s see if I can actually put a working link to her LJ in here…) jbknowles.

Instead of running the month of November, Jo’s challenge starts today (and it’s not too late to sign up!) and goes until the end of November. Other than you get longer to reach your goal, it works basically the same way as NaNoWriMo. And JoNoWriMo just SOUNDS cool!
