Yesterday was the Junior High Kid’s first day of summer vacation, so he and I got up early and drove to Des Moines for our tour of the Great Ape Trust facility. Actually, we tried to get a tour of this place a year ago and couldn’t get one, so we were thrilled we not only got one this year, but we got one for the first day of summer vacation.

On the way over, Junior High Kid looked over the paperwork I had to fill out in order to get this tour (we had to bring it along). All of a sudden he blurted out, “You’re 41!?!?!” I said, “Y-e-e-e-s-s-s….” He said, “Wow! You sure don’t act that old.” Considering this is a kid who is still willing to be seen in public with me (even at school!), I’m assuming he meant it as a compliment…but I had to smile anyway.

I’m not sure who was more fascinated by everything we heard and saw yesterday…Junior High Kid or me. (Though I took the entire day off from writing, I think of it as “investing in my future” because it looks like I may have a new writing possibility…) The research that’s going on there is really amazing!

After our two and a half hour tour, we had a picnic lunch, then went over to the science museum, and finally had dinner at Macaroni Grill (which we don’t have here in Iowa City, unfortunately) before we drove back. All in all, it was a very nice beginning to summer vacation.
