I will not request unnecessary changes to Yes, I Know the Monkey Man. Do I need to say that again? Yes, I probably do. I will not request unnecessary changes to Yes, I Know the Monkey Man. I will not request unnecessary changes to Yes, I Know the Monkey Man. I will not request unnecessary changes to Yes, I Know the Monkey Man.

I’ve got typeset pages to read now. One is not supposed to request changes at this point…not unless there are actual errors in the book. Of course, there are ALWAYS errors in the book! But I also have a tendency to try and sneak a few (okay, MORE than “a few”) last minute changes in at this point.

I’m not going to do that this time. I promise. (I made A LOT of changes in the last two passes…I am lucky my editor is still speaking to me. She’s the one who had to reype them all into the master document. I shouldn’t need to make more changes now.)

I think of my friend who was so excited to get her first typeset pages back a year or so ago. I remember asking her how many changes she requested. I expected her answer to make me feel very good about myself (because she is even more nitpicky than I am!) But her answer actually made feel guilty. She didn’t request ANY changes. None. Zero. Well, she finally admitted, she had them fix something in a caption somewhere, but nothing in the text. She said the text was fine.

So…if SHE can manage to get through her typeset pages without asking for ANY changes, one would think I could rein myself in just a little this time around…

This I promise…

As I’m going through the pages, every time I see something I want to change, I remember this post and ask myself, “Do I REALLY need to change this???”
