**
Make sure your story is the best it can possibly be. --Revise!
Revise! Revise! --Ask
a friend or teacher to read your story. Then
revise again! --Make
sure there are no spelling or grammar errors
** BE
PROFESSIONAL !!! There is a
standard what your submission should include and how it should look: --Type
your story (use a standard font like courier on plain white paper) --Type
your name, address and phone in the upper left hand corner (single space –
name on one line, address on the next, phone number on the third) --Count
up the words in your story and type it upper right hand corner (for instance:
350 words) --Go
halfway down the page and center title --Double-space
your story --Include
page numbers, but don’t number your first page or your cover letter --Include
a cover letter -- a short letter to the editor thanking him/her for looking at
your story --Always
include a self addressed stamped envelope
--PROOFREAD everything before you send it
--Never send your only copy of your story ** Do
Your Homework --Learn
something about the publication you want to submit to --Read
back issues and make sure your story is like other stories they publish **Follow
Their Guidelines --if
they want a 500 word story, don’t send them a 1,000 word story (even if it’s
really, really
good!) **Don’t get discouraged! Remember, Dr. Seuss’s first book was rejected 63 times before it was accepted. Almost every writer faces rejection. |
